Meet the gore defence team at milipol

    Andreas Marmsoler

The Milipol show in Paris is a key place for networking and exchanging latest innovations and future defence trends. Gore Associates Isabelle Lefevre and Dominique Bruyen, experts in the French military market, share their insights about trends in garments and footwear and how innovations from GORE-TEX Professional can help.

What are the current garment trends in the French military?

Isabelle Lefevre: Ergonomics is a priority issue: softer materials, cuts that fit closer to the body, and that adapt to movement.
Fire protection is recurring need: this protection must not compromise durability and comfort.
Intercompatibility of equipment: it's important that new equipment is compatible with all the others.

What is the biggest need for garment protection of soldiers?

Isabell Lefevre: As operating grounds have moved to a continental climate, there is a need for protection against wet, cool to very cold weather.
Protecting against the cold without inducing discomfort is essential: the layers of clothing worn by the soldier must be adapted to each other in terms of ergonomics and thermal comfort.

How can GORE-TEX Professional support the French soldiers through innovative technologies?

Dominique Bruyen: The footwear must be fore the military, light but robust, offering a high level of protection, ergonomics and climate, and in which comfort and safety suffer no compromise. Today's French army sources its footwear from manufacturers of the highest quality. We are particularly proud to work closely with them to constantly improve the products.

GORE-TEX Professional launches new EXTRAGUARD upper material for defence use: how will this support the soldiers?

Dominique Bruyen: Until now, we've offered a range of linings (with different levels of insulation) and adapted technologies. Now we're breaking new ground with a highly resistant, lightweight, waterproof and breathable upper material that doesn't absorb water even in extreme wet conditions. Its use on the upper of the shoe, instead of a traditional construction, provides even more durable waterproofing and saves a considerable amount of weight. The shoes will be much lighter, and will stay light.

Protection in cold environment is a key requirement: How can GORE-TEX Professional support the French soldiers through innovative material?

Dominique Bruyen: It's very important for us to understand the end-use and the intended purpose. We have been working on thermal comfort and insulation for many years and are constantly looking for new solutions to meet changing needs. New materials and technologies mean that our footwear offers lasting insulation without increasing volume, while remaining very light. Our aim is to offer optimum insulation even in extreme wet and cold conditions, while remaining highly tactical.

Northern Germany police stretch garments climbing Bavarian mountains

    Rainer Glaesemer

“Our products do what we say they do”, a guiding principle of Bob Gore, is still valid for the products we sell. Known as a critical person, I always try to make my own judgement for the products I sell, too. That´s why I take out and try our products or my private use in ski-touring, climbing, or cutting wood for the next winter. My application might be different from the real use of a policeman or technical rescue person- but it always gives me a very good impression. And, sometimes I simply fall in love with the comfort and versatility of a piece---like with my stretch garment.

Most police officers in Germany are wearing their ballistic protection every day. To be more versatile, the ballistic is typically no longer worn underneath the shirt as years ago but often included in a carrier vest (#Aussentragehülle, #ATH) that also allows to attach other equipment.

As a result, the torso area is typically warmer as its covered by the carrier while arms are hardly insulated. Under cool/windy conditions the normal shirt is too cold, a pullover does not integrate well and both options do not deliver protection in light rain.

To offer a comfortable solution, some federal states in northern Germany joined up to develop a functional garment that closes this gap. Gore partner #Schöffel professional wear won a significant contract for a WINDSTOPPER® Softshell jacket with insulated arms to be worn under the ATH (“Unterziehjacke für Aussentragehülle”). To allow movement without restriction caused by the close-fitting carrier vest, this jacket (also available as shirt with short zipper) uses #GORE #STRETCH technology in relevant areas.

Giving our material a hard try whenever possible I can confirm: this garment also works perfect for early bird mountain tours, when you a wearing a loaded backpack and you face a chilling wind from the summit in the narrow gully you have to climb to access the headwall.

(Disclaimer: I only wore this great jacket in loneliness to avoid appearing as an official which I´m not. Item is a pre-production test sample)

Winter wearer trial in the agricultural sector

Joschi GTX ESD S3 CI by ELTEN

A recent wearer trial set up by Gore in cooperation with the agricultural division of BayWa AG and ELTEN, the manufacturer of the test boots, attests to the functional and comfort benefits of the new GORE-TEX Insulated Comfort footwear laminate AIRFIBER that features a hollow fibre insulation technology: a high level of thermal insulation - combined with a lighter weight and a more comfortable fit.

Between September 2017 and March 2018, 31 workers at BayWa AG in Neunburg, Germany, tested GORE-TEX Joschi ESD CI boots by ELTEN featuring the new AIRFIBER footwear laminate. They wore the boots 4-5 days a week and 6-9 hours a day. This was mostly inside unheated buildings as well as outdoors in temperatures as low as minus 16°C, and in wet environments. During this time the participants performed activities such as installation work in farm buildings and dairies, or maintenance work in biogas plants.

This is what some of the participants had to say about the waterproofness and heat retention properties of the test boots:

The boots are durably waterproof: that was really important in the winter, in rain and when there was a lot of snow (waterproofness).
They are the best winter boots I've ever worn (thermal insulation).

    WATERPROOFNESS

All of the participants confirmed that the test boots were totally waterproof. This feature proved to be particularly beneficial when working outdoors in slushy snow and icy conditions, and while performing tasks in the dairy or involving milk tanks.

    PERCEPTION OF TEMPERATURE

77% of the participants confirmed that the temperature inside the test boots was “pleasant”, even when they were working outdoors in temperatures as low as minus 15 °C.

18 of the 31 participants (58%) said that the test boots were “warmer” than their old safety boots.

    SWEATING

76% of the participants said they perceived “no sweating” or only “mild” sweating in the test boots.

20 of the 30 participants (67%) said that they had even sweat “less” than in their old boots (half of which had no membrane).

    FIT

81% of the participants were extremely satisfied with the fit of the test boots.

The data collected during the wearer trial was analysed by HYVE, a Munich-based innovation and market research agency.

GORE-TEX and WINDSTOPPER® jackets by GORE-TEX LABS with stretch technology

TESTED BY THE INTERNATIONAL POLICE TRAINING SYSTEM (NAPLES)

The challenges confronting the police have been on the rise for decades, particularly in large cities. Above all else, the increase in the number of petty crimes calls for higher standards around safety and responsiveness. Officers also often encounter extreme weather conditions, such as heat, cold, or heavy rain. Whether their missions involve rescue operations in response to flooding incidents or helping motorists stuck in snow, police officers need garments that provide them with protection and freedom of movement in a diverse range of situations.

GORE-TEX jackets built around the innovative Smart Garment Concept and featuring Gore stretch technology successfully fulfil these performance requirements. The fabric is durably waterproof, windproof and breathable. Incorporating extremely elastic features, it also offers high levels of comfort and freedom of movement, further enhanced by stretch panels in the areas of the elbows, hips and knees.

Within ten years I.P.T.S., an international police training association, has trained over 7,000 officers from 80 police force areas. For a period of two years, the association's instructors wore GORE-TEX and WINDSTOPPER® jackets by GORE-TEX LABS with stretch technology under real-life conditions: indoors and outdoors, in high temperatures and heavy rain, and also in stressful situations such as when arresting a suspect.

We all agree that the Gore jackets with stretch technology meet the needs of the job and the demands it places on us.

(Christiano Curti Giardiana, president of I.P.T.S.)

    ALSO SUITABLE FOR EXTREME WEATHER

Gore's innovative Smart Garment Concept meets the key requirements of a modern functional garment. The jackets provide durable protection in different weather conditions and can easily be worn with other layers underneath, for instance an inner liner for added warmth.

We sometimes stand outside in the cold for hours on end, often in the rain. That's why we need garments that will withstand bad weather.

    (William Albano, instructor).

    COMFORT AND FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT

Stretch panels relieve the parts of the body that come under strain when you make certain movements or adopt a particular posture. The stretch panels at the sides of the jacket allow for the natural extension motions of the upper body and sideways movements of the wearer.

A police uniform jacket has to offer ultimate ease of movement in all situations, whatever shift the officer is working and whatever the policing task.

    (William Albano, I.P.T.S. instructor).
